Transformers 3: in our culturally condescending film-snob faces, everyone!

Bang! Smash! Deep emotional resonance! Pow! Character development! Boom!
For a great many, the release of Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon is a high-tide mark of Summer cinematic triteness, with the idea of Michael Bay sat in an editing suite going "Peeeeeeeowwwww! Buddabuddabudda! Neeeeeeeeorrrrrrrrrr! Woooooooosh! Etcccccccccc!" while repositioning his Barbie dolls and action figures while CGI techs make everything bigger and louder than everything else being too much for them to contemplate. This wasn't what Cahiers du Cinema had in mind, right?

Still, some people have gone to bat for Bay, quite rightly pointing out that, you know, you can't kick his arse for not making high art when that's not what he's trying to do, and that we unfairly skew our view towards mass culture and don't treat more gentrified matter with the same fierce scrutiny.

Turns out the people behind this, The Monocular Group, are actually on a viral tip with this, but that doesn't make the point any less valid, ya massive snobs. Yeah, you. Oh, and me. Thanks go to Twitch for the link.

  1. Ha ha that was a great, although somewhat flawed argument. Viral it's the new fing innit. That's the first time I've seen the trailer for Transformers 3, I could go and see that at the cinema.

I like action films when they are good, the problem is so few of them are good. I like them to be as lean as possible, I don't need sub plots or back stories, but I do demand a decent story to hang all that CGI stuff on. Night all.
